Discovering Affordable Flights with Google Flights: Tips and Tools

How to Find Cheap Flights on Google Flights

Google Flights is a robust tool that lets you search multiple departure cities and destinations in one search. It also offers a calendar view that shows prices over a two-month span, with the lowest dates highlighted in green. The site will even notify you if changing your travel dates by a day or two could save you money.

Price tracking

One of the most useful features on Google Flights is the ability to track flight prices and receive alerts when they change. This is especially helpful if you’re planning to travel for a set time period, like for a wedding or a family vacation. However, this feature doesn’t catch every deal right away, and it may not even spot a Mistake Fare (an airline error that lowers prices for certain flights) in time to book it before it disappears.

This week, Google is adding a new tool to its flight search that will help travelers decide whether it’s better to book or wait for a deal. The company’s new upgraded insights will tell travelers when prices for their itinerary are low, typical, or high compared to past averages for that route and dates. In addition, the site will also show how much money they can save by booking or waiting. This feature will only be available for searches with reliable trend data.

Exclusions

Google Flights allows you to narrow your search by multiple factors such as price, layovers and flight duration. You can also filter by airlines and airports, select nonstop flights and choose your preferred dates. You can also limit your search by excluding flights with multiple stops or those that don’t include a carry-on bag. You can even set a maximum flight price.

You can also track prices with Google Flights, which will alert you when fares drop within your budget. To do this, log in to your Google account and look for the track prices toggle. It’s at the bottom of the page.

However, there are some airlines that do not show up on Google Flights. Southwest Airlines is a notable example of this. Google requires a partnership with the airline or a data provider to display their airfares on the site. This is to ensure that travelers get a comprehensive view of pricing options.

Date grid

When it comes to finding cheap flights, the date grid is a valuable tool. It is similar to the calendar but offers a more compact view of the prices for different dates. It highlights the cheapest dates in green and lets you line up outbound and inbound flights to see what combinations work best. It also provides historical price data, so you can understand whether a particular fare is normal, high, or low.

To use the date grid, first enter your departure and destination and select a time frame. Next, click the “Date grid” button, which will display a handy chart showing the cheapest flights for those dates. Shifting your dates a few days can often save you money. Sometimes, those savings are even in the hundreds of dollars. It is important to remember that flight prices are always changing. The prices that are displayed today may be wildly different tomorrow. This is why it is important to be flexible with your dates and destinations.

ITA Matrix tool

While Google Flights is a good tool for basic searches, the ITA Matrix tool offers more search power and customization. It can be used to find open-jaw flights, multi-city itineraries, and more. It also provides detailed pricing information, including the breakdown of all the items that go into the ticket price.

This tool allows you to use “Routing Codes” and “Extension Codes” that tailor your search to specific criteria. For example, typing “AA?” tells ITA Matrix to only display American Airlines flights, while entering “DEN?” excludes Denver from your search. You can also use these codes to filter by cabin class or airline alliances.

Using ITA Matrix is not easy, however, because it takes a long time to load results. It is worth trying if you have the patience to wait for it. The good news is that there are tools that can help you get around ITA Matrix’s limitations, such as a plugin called PowerTools.
